Never Underestimate The Influence Of Smart Goals

2021 has ended and a new year has started. What are your health and wellness goals for 2022?

Setting a SMART goal is a very effective way to not only say you are going to start making a healthy lifestyle change but to be very specific and intentional about it.

A SMART goal is...

Specific: Who? What? Where? and Why?

Measurable: How will I know when my goal has been reached?

Attainable: What are the steps I must take to reach my goal?

Relevant: Why do I want to reach this goal and is it relevant to me?

Timely: When will I start/finish my goal?

It is important to keep the following tips in mind once you start planning for your healthy lifestyle change.

This is a process that cannot be rushed--lasting changes (meaning lifestyle changes that will continue for months and years to come) happen over time, not over night.

We are talking about baby steps here--think about all the little changes that you must make to reach your ultimate goal.

Celebrate your accomplishments along the way-- No one does everything perfectly all the time, but each small still deserves praise.

When you create a new SMART goal, add a section for challenges that you might face, as well as a plan to combat them, so you can remain successful.

Here's an example of a SMART goal to eat 800 g of fruits and veggies a day!

Goal: Eat 800 g of fruits and veggies a day!

Specific: I will eat 800 g of fruits and veggies every day of the week for 30 days beginning January 10, 2022.

Measurable: I will track my fruits and veggies everyday by weighing or measuring them beforehand.

Attainable: To reach this goal I must plan my veggies and fruits at night or at the beginning of each day.

Relevant: I will continue to eat fruits and veggies everyday to stay on track and improve my nutrition.

Timely: This will continue for life. In one month, I will continue to eat 800 g a day of fruits and vegetables to hit my goals.

Challenges I may encounter:

1. Not having enough fruits and vegetables in my fridge.

2. A busy day-prepare the night before or start back the next day.

3. Variety-challenge yourself to try new foods or stick with the old ones--just keep going.
